Presiding Over First NSC Meeting Since Taking Office
"Prevention Is More Important Than Response in National Security"
President Lee Jaemyung stated on July 10 that efforts must be made to restore the severed inter-Korean relationship. He emphasized that peace and coexistence between the two Koreas are the most realistic and practical options for our security.
According to spokesperson Kang Yujeong's briefing, President Lee made these remarks while presiding over his first National Security Council (NSC) meeting since taking office at the presidential office on the afternoon of July 10. President Lee added, "If security is shaken, the economy will collapse and our daily lives cannot be safe," and called for collective wisdom to ensure the safety of the people's lives.
He also stressed the importance of preemptive measures in national security. President Lee stated, "We must comprehensively examine not only the shifting international order but also domestic political circumstances and the North Korean factor, which reflects the unique situation of the Korean Peninsula." He added, "All relevant ministries must work together with national interests as the top priority, focusing on peace, practicality, and the safety of the people."
Meanwhile, the NSC meeting lasted about 2 hours and 10 minutes and was conducted in a manner that reviewed major security issues expected in the second half of this year and discussed possible response measures in advance.
