Eight Designated Beaches Open... Songdo Beach Reopens After 18 Years
Full of Unique Attractions and Activities
City Makes Every Effort to Ensure a Safe Environment

Pohang City will officially open all eight designated beaches in the region on July 12, marking the start of the full-fledged summer marine tourism season.


The beaches will be open for a total of 44 days until August 24, and the city has completed thorough preparations to welcome both residents and tourists.

This year, the eight designated beaches opening are Yeongildae, Songdo, Hwajin, Chilpo, Wolpo, Guryongpo, Dogu, and Sinchang. Each beach offers its own unique attractions and activities.


Yeongildae Beach is located in the heart of the city, making it highly accessible, and is popular every year for its beautiful night views. The beach features a pavilion over the sea, nearby marine leisure facilities, and sand art installations, providing a wide range of activities for visitors.


Songdo Beach will reopen this year after 18 years. Following the restoration of its sandy shore and environmental improvements, it has been newly transformed into an urban seaside resort, drawing significant attention.


Chilpo and Wolpo Beaches are especially popular for surfing and camping, making them favorite destinations among young people and families. Hwajin Beach, surrounded by dense pine forests, offers a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat.


Guryongpo Beach is gaining recognition as a stay-type tourist destination, thanks to its unique harbor village charm and its proximity to Guryongpo Market and the Modern Cultural History Street, which allow for walking tours and culinary experiences. During the summer vacation season, visitors can also participate in squid fishing programs.


Dogu and Sinchang Beaches are considered hidden gems, where visitors can enjoy the sea in a relatively peaceful and relaxed setting.


The city has deployed water safety personnel, rescue teams, police stations, and emergency medical staff at each beach to ensure a safe environment for vacationers.


Additionally, all convenience facilities such as showers and restrooms have been upgraded, jellyfish control and shark nets have been installed, and joint safety inspections by public and private sectors have been completed. The city is also running a price stabilization campaign for beach vendors to prevent excessive charges, aiming to create a fair and enjoyable vacation spot.


Son Jeongho, Director of the Department of Oceans and Fisheries, stated, "Pohang is advancing as a marine tourism city that combines experiences, relaxation, and culture. This year is especially meaningful as Songdo Beach reopens after 18 years. We have meticulously prepared for safety and convenience, and we hope many residents and tourists will have an unforgettable summer in Pohang."


On July 12, an opening ceremony for Songdo Beach and a completion ceremony for the Sea City Hall will be held in the Songdo Beach area.


On the same day, Yeongildae, Hwajin, Chilpo, Wolpo, Guryongpo, Dogu, and Sinchang Beaches will also hold opening ceremonies in the morning, featuring traditional rituals such as Sushinje and Eoryongje.
