Two Employees from Gyeongin Branch
Report to Local Police Station
Korea Citibank announced on July 9 that two employees from its Gyeongin Branch received a letter of appreciation from the Incheon Namdong Police Station for their contribution to apprehending a cash mule involved in a voice phishing crime, which they detected on-site and reported to the police.
The incident took place at the Gyeongin Branch located in Namdong, Incheon. When a person impersonating a customer attempted to withdraw a large sum of cash, the employee noticed unusual cash flow and suspicious signs during the customer service process. Suspecting the possibility of a voice phishing crime, the employee immediately reported the case to the local police precinct. Police officers from the Incheon Guwol Precinct responded and were able to apprehend the cash mule on the spot, thereby preventing further damage in advance.
Korea Citibank has long implemented various employee training programs, including voice phishing response training for all staff, scenario-based activities such as supporting on-site police dispatch, and information sharing through internal messages. The bank also conducts outreach financial education sessions for elderly customers who are vulnerable to voice phishing, visiting welfare centers and other locations to promote prevention.
The Gyeongin Branch employee who played a key role in apprehending the cash mule stated, "I believe that protecting customers is the starting point and the highest priority in all our work. The in-house voice phishing response training that I was familiar with was very helpful. I am grateful to my colleagues at the Gyeongin Branch who supported me so that I could respond calmly and appropriately."
The chief of the Incheon Namdong Police Station, who presented the letter of appreciation, said, "To eradicate voice phishing, the Namdong Police Station is continuing close cooperation with local financial institutions. In this case, the decisive roles were played by the bank employees and police officers who detected the risk and responded immediately in coordination."
