National Pukyong University Student Wins Excellent Paper Award for Laser Treatment Research on Urethral Stricture

Junsunho, Master's Student,
Receives Excellent Paper Award
from the Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engineering

National Pukyong University (President Bae Sanghoon) announced that Junsunho, a master's student in the Department of 4th Industrial Convergence Bionics Engineering, received the Excellent Paper Award from the Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engineering for his paper titled "A Study on Laser-Assisted Photothermal Ablation for the Treatment of Urethral Stricture" (supervised by Professor Kang Hyunwook, Department of Biomedical Engineering).

This paper, published in Volume 46, Issue 1 of the Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engineering's journal in 2025, was highly evaluated for presenting a treatment method that minimizes side effects in urethral stricture therapy by using a near-infrared (1470nm) laser and radial optical fiber through simulations and ex vivo tissue experiments.

In this research, Junsunho utilized a 1470nm near-infrared wavelength and radial optical fiber, which can precisely control thermal diffusion, in order to minimize the extensive treatment area?a primary cause of recurrence in urethral stricture.

As a result of conducting simulations and ex vivo tissue experiments, he confirmed that it is possible to effectively remove the stricture within the urethra while controlling the excision area at a minimal scale.

Junsunho carried out this research with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's University-Focused Research Institute Support Project in Science and Engineering (principal investigator: Professor Jung Wongyo) and the 4th Stage BK21 New Senior Customized Healthcare Project (project leader: Professor Lee Byungil), achieving outstanding results.

The Korean Society of Medical and Biological Engineering, established in 1979, is a leading academic organization in the field of biomedical engineering in Korea. With over 6,000 members?the largest in the country?active in medicine, life sciences, and engineering, the society publishes both international and domestic academic journals.
