Regarding the re-arrest of former President Yoon Sukyeol, Lim Eunjeong, Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, stated, "I believe this is not a coincidence, but an inevitable consequence of his actions."
On July 10, Chief Prosecutor Lim wrote on her Facebook account, "On the day Colonel Park Junghoon, who nearly faced detention because of former President Yoon, was acquitted, and I also received news of my victory in the 'prosecutor blacklist' damages lawsuit, he was re-admitted to Seoul Detention Center and taken into custody."
Chief Prosecutor Lim recalled, "I heard the news of former President Yoon's detention in the morning. Watching him, after becoming Prosecutor General, use the prosecution as a tool in his race for the presidency, I felt deep sadness as I foresaw the inevitable downfall awaiting both him and the prosecution."
She continued, "The pitiful sight of a former Prosecutor General and President, now clinging to lies and excuses to avoid detention and a heavy sentence, was entirely predictable," adding, "As a junior prosecutor and as a citizen, this is both shameful and deeply humiliating."
Chief Prosecutor Lim also expressed concern that the prosecution, which once operated as one with former President Yoon, now faces the coming waves of an angry investigation system reform. She said, "They should respond with humility and modesty, but I worry that their response may be just like his."
She added, "This turmoil is also a burden that democracy must bear, and it is yet another hurdle we will eventually overcome. I am grateful to have been given the role of pushing the wheel of history forward, rather than being an obstacle to it, and I will continue to move forward with determination."
Former President Yoon was first detained by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in March on charges of leading an insurrection, but was released after the court canceled his detention order. However, after 124 days, he was re-arrested. Although former President Yoon appeared in court to plead his innocence, he was unable to avoid a second detention. At approximately 2:07 a.m. on July 10, Nam Sejin, the presiding judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant for former President Yoon at the request of the special investigation team for insurrection. The charges included abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights, obstruction of special official duties, fabrication and use of false official documents, violation of the Presidential Records Act, damage to official documents, violation of the Presidential Security Act, and instigating the harboring of a criminal.
