Kang Kijeong, mayor of Gwangju, has launched a "30-day special measure" to minimize inconvenience to citizens caused by the construction of Urban Railway Line 2. In a situation where construction delays are inevitable, the mayor has personally visited the site to express his determination to minimize inconvenience for citizens.
On July 9, Mayor Kang personally inspected the construction site near the Geumho District Entrance Intersection in Seo-gu. In this section, a large number of underground utilities differing from the design drawings have been discovered, and a significant height difference between steel plates and adjacent roads has caused severe inconvenience for drivers.
In response, the city has activated the "Rapid Response Urban Railway Task Force (TF) for Citizen Inconvenience," involving four divisions and nine departments, and has decided to conduct on-site inspections every week. In particular, overlay paving work will be carried out quickly to reduce road level differences in major complaint areas such as the Uncheon Reservoir to Sangmu Middle School section. Four sections have been designated as priorities: Geumho District, Gwangju National University of Education to Seobang Intersection, Hoejaero (from Wonkwang University Hospital Intersection to Juwol Junction), and the area near Chosun University.
Mayor Kang stated, "Resolving driver inconvenience and ensuring citizen safety are our top priorities," and gave direct instructions for prompt temporary paving and response to complaints. He also checked the progress of nighttime work to minimize damage to local businesses and visited nearby shops to listen to citizens' opinions.
Meanwhile, Mayor Kang also inspected the site's measures against the heat wave. He thoroughly checked protective measures such as shade installations, air-conditioned break rooms, and the provision of bottled water to prevent heat-related illnesses among workers, and urged strict adherence to the heat wave response manual. Gwangju City plans to continue to make every effort to protect vulnerable groups from the heat and to strengthen on-site safety management.
