The Sacheon Sea is bustling with activity. Anglers from across the country are gathering in Sacheon to catch octopus.
According to Sacheon City on July 10, as of 9 a.m. on the 9th, when the octopus fishing ban was lifted, about 650 fishing and leisure boats set out to sea, and around 2,800 anglers from all over the country participated in the outing. On the same day last year, about 700 boats went out, and around 1,000 anglers from across the nation took part. At that time, each person enjoyed catching an average of more than 20 Samcheonpo Dolmungeo octopuses.

The waters near Samcheonpo Bridge, known for their strong currents, become prime spots for Samcheonpo Dolmungeo octopus fishing when the tidal flow slows down during the transition between high and low tide. The Samcheonpo Dolmungeo octopus caught in the Sacheon Sea is in season mainly from June to September, a period of three months. It is characterized by its especially red color and mild flavor.
Sacheon City expects that the influx of anglers from all over the country will not only fill fishing boats but also revitalize the local economy, bringing rare smiles to the community. Last year, anglers flocked not only from Seoul but also from the capital region, Chungcheong, and Jeolla, resulting in a boom for fishing-related shops as well as restaurants and gas stations. Especially, during weekdays, 700 to 1,000 people visited Sacheon, and on weekends, 1,500 to 2,000 people came, leading to such high demand for accommodations that it was said "getting a room was like picking stars from the sky," as the lodging industry enjoyed a boom.

Popular attractions and culinary destinations in Sacheon, such as the Sacheon Sea Cable Car, Aramaru Aquarium, and Yonggung Fish Market, also saw a steady stream of anglers eager to enjoy the scenery of the Sacheon Sea and purchase fresh seafood.
On the 9th, Park Dongsik, the mayor of Sacheon, personally visited the octopus fishing grounds, octopus trap fishermen, and fishing boat operators as they began full-scale operations. Mayor Park boarded the fisheries guidance vessel (Gyeongnam 233) with officials from the maritime and fisheries department, set out to the coastal fishing grounds, encouraged the working fishermen, and emphasized the importance of safe operations on site. Mayor Park stated, "Samcheonpo Dolmungeo octopus is not only a major source of income for local fishermen but also a key added value for the regional economy," adding, "We will continue to promote on-site communication with fishermen to create a safe working environment and establish sound fishing practices."
