The First Human Exploration Toward a Planet Removed from the Solar System
The Miryang City Facilities Management Corporation will operate a special commentary program at the Miryang Arirang Space Observatory’s planetarium, “Sangsang,” for about two weeks from July 15 to July 27, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of New Horizons’ Pluto flyby.
New Horizons was launched in 2006 and performed a close flyby at a distance of about 12,500 km from Pluto, collecting data on Pluto’s atmosphere, surface, and geological structures. Since then, it has continued close exploration of Kuiper Belt objects, playing a key role in uncovering the secrets of celestial bodies located in the outer solar system.

This special commentary has been organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of New Horizons’ Pluto flyby and to vividly convey the achievements and scientific significance of humanity’s exploration of the outer solar system. Visitors are expected to enjoy an immersive experience through exploration simulation videos and commentary produced by the observatory staff.
Kim Kyungmin, Chairman of the Board, said, “I hope that this special commentary, themed around Pluto, which has been excluded from the solar system, and New Horizons, which explored it, will provide visitors with an easy and engaging opportunity to reflect on the history and significance of humanity’s space exploration.”
Meanwhile, the Miryang Arirang Space Observatory continues to operate special commentary programs commemorating humanity’s space exploration, including this event. In January, a special commentary was held on the 20th anniversary of the Cassini-Huygens Titan landing, and in February, the 25th anniversary of the Pale Blue Dot. The observatory plans to continue highlighting other significant milestones in space exploration in the future.
