Former Vice Minister of Unification Chun Hae-sung Appointed as Special Advisor to NIS Director

Former Vice Minister of Unification Chun Hae-sung has reportedly been appointed as a special advisor to National Intelligence Service Director Lee Jong-seok.

According to multiple sources on July 10, Chun was appointed as a special advisor immediately after Lee took office and is currently serving in that position. Chun, an expert on North Korea, was appointed as a special envoy to the North during the Moon Jae-in administration and once met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Chun previously worked as a policy officer at the National Security Council (NSC) when Lee served as deputy secretary-general of the NSC under the Roh Moo-hyun administration. When Lee became Minister of Unification, Chun continued to earn his trust and held key positions, demonstrating a close working relationship.

Within and outside the government, there is speculation that the Lee Jae-myung administration may be seeking to explore the possibility of inter-Korean dialogue through this appointment, given Chun’s extensive experience in North-South talks. However, the National Intelligence Service stated, "We cannot confirm any personnel matters" regarding this appointment.
