Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province (Mayor Noh Gwankyu) announced on the 10th that, in line with the joint visit of the National Policy Planning Committee (Chairperson Lee Hanju), which is acting as the transition committee for the Lee Jaemyung administration, and the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on the 9th, it explained key regional issues and future strategic tasks, and requested that these be reflected in national policy agendas.
The National Policy Planning Committee is currently formulating the new government's national policy agenda for the next five years, and is touring regional hub cities to promote balanced regional development and gather public opinion. After visiting Gangneung and Chuncheon in the Gangwon region and Mokpo in the Honam region, the committee visited Suncheon, a hub city for population and transportation, which has raised expectations that major local projects will be included in the national policy agenda.
At the Garden Workation Center, Mayor Noh Gwankyu introduced Suncheon's innovative cases and visions to Park Gyuseop, Director General of External Cooperation at the National Policy Planning Committee, including the preservation of Suncheon Bay, the 2026 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo, and the promotion of cultural content and the bioindustry.
Suncheon City proposed seven major future strategies to lead balanced national development: fostering the K-Green Bio industry as a future agricultural and food hub; establishing K-Disney as a global cultural industry center; creating a space and defense cluster and national industrial complex in South Jeolla; developing the Southwest Coast eco-marine-healing tourism belt; expanding the Gyeongjeon Line and Jeolla Line super-regional railway networks; establishing a joint national medical school between Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University; and supporting the bid to host the World Universiade.
After the meeting, the National Policy Planning Committee visited the Seungju Green Bioindustry Innovation Cluster, which is seeking new pathways amid the crisis of rural and regional extinction. Mayor Noh Gwankyu emphasized, "We are fostering the green bioindustry by utilizing local infrastructure such as the bio-fermentation foundation, the microorganism center, and the APC, in order to transform South Jeolla's agriculture and fisheries-based industrial structure into a high value-added industry." He added, "To promote industrial clustering, it is essential to designate a green bioindustry development zone and to receive active government support, including 120 billion won in national funding."
In response, Park Gyuseop, Director General of External Cooperation, said, "Unlike other cities, Suncheon clearly demonstrates why and for what purpose funding is needed. The city aligns well with the government's pragmatism and is likely to receive positive evaluations as a well-prepared city."
The National Policy Planning Committee plans to finalize the national policy agenda by mid-August, incorporating the on-site suggestions and public proposals gathered during this visit. Suncheon City intends to proactively respond to ensure that local issues and strategic industries are reflected in the committee's national policy agenda.
