Boryeong City in South Chungcheong Province is drawing attention as a stay-type city, showing the most active flow of resident population among all population-declining areas nationwide.

On July 9, Boryeong City announced that, according to the "2024 Resident Population Calculation Results for Population-Declining Areas" recently released by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Statistics Korea, the city's cumulative resident population in 2023 reached a total of 7.52 million. This ranked Boryeong fourth among 89 population-declining areas nationwide and second within South Chungcheong Province.

The resident population indicator includes not only those registered in the resident registry and registered foreigners, but also people who stay in the area at least once a month for more than three hours per day.

This indicator is attracting attention because it reflects the population that has a tangible impact on the local economy and culture, beyond just the number of residents.

The city consistently ranked among the top in each quarterly announcement. In particular, in the third quarter of 2023, Boryeong recorded 2.21 million resident population, the highest in South Chungcheong Province.

This figure is analyzed to be the result of an increase in visitors seeking abundant tourist attractions such as Daecheon Beach, Jusan Cherry Blossom Road, Sanghwawon Korean Traditional Garden, and Chungcheong Suyeongseong Fortress.

The city has actively promoted stay-type programs and infrastructure expansion policies, including "Boryeong One-Month Living," the "Boryeong Workation Base Center," and the expansion of the road network.

Mayor Kim Dongil stated, "To usher in the era of 10 million resident population, we will expand year-round tourism content and strengthen policies that encourage population inflow from temporary stays to permanent settlement."
