Gwangyang's AI and IoT-Based 'Smart City Plan' Approved by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

Establishing a Mid- to Long-Term Roadmap
for Solving Urban Issues

On July 8, the city of Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, announced that its 'Gwangyang Smart City Plan,' which was established to address various urban issues such as education, transportation, and disaster management, has received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

A 'smart city' refers to a city that utilizes advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, big data, and virtual reality (VR) to solve urban problems and improve quality of life. The core of a smart city lies in the integration of these technologies with urban infrastructure to provide converged and complex services.

The recently approved Gwangyang Smart City Plan serves as a mid- to long-term roadmap for 2025 to 2029. It further elaborates and enhances the effectiveness of the previous smart city plan that was implemented over the past five years, up to 2023.

Under this plan, the city intends to expand the AI Smart I-Kium platform within this year, aiming to guarantee the right to education and bridge the digital divide. In addition, based on the recently launched 'MY Gwangyang' app, the city will gradually implement 15 detailed projects, including the introduction of an AI civil service chatbot, the creation of smart parks, and the adoption of an intelligent CCTV monitoring system.

Lee Eunmi, head of the Digital Information Division, stated, "With the approval of this smart city plan, we have not only established a vision and mid- to long-term strategy for our city's smart city initiative, but we are now also able to respond swiftly to government calls for proposals supporting smart city development by various ministries. Going forward, we will do our utmost to provide services that incorporate Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies into all aspects of citizens' lives, striving to build a smart city in Gwangyang where residents can enjoy greater happiness."
