Tongmyong University Team Wins Acclaim at Busan International Architectural Design Workshop
for Innovative Urban Solutions through Architecture
The Department of Architecture at Tongmyong University was ranked fourth among a total of 18 participating teams at the 2025 Busan International Architectural Design Workshop (held from June 30 to July 1, 2025).
This achievement recognized the team's outstanding creativity and planning capabilities in the field of urban architecture integrated planning.
The Tongmyong University team (Ahn Junghyun, Lee Sanguk, Choi Jinyoung, Ha Seokhyun) received high praise for submitting an urban space design proposal centered on the urban axis connecting "Busan Citizens Park - Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center - Dongcheon Stream Area." Their proposal featured a pedestrian-oriented three-dimensional circulation structure, the creation of an eco-friendly cultural plaza, and an urban space where publicness and historical value are harmoniously integrated.
This award-winning work is scheduled to be publicly exhibited during the "2025 Busan International Architecture Festival," which will be held at BEXCO from September 17 to 21, 2025.
Lee Gwangguk, head of the Department of Architecture at Tongmyong University, stated, "This workshop served as an international idea platform for thinking integratively about urban space and life," adding, "It was a valuable experience for our students to communicate with the global architectural community and demonstrate their creative capabilities. We will continue to expand opportunities for students to participate in international competitions and provide ongoing education and support for these efforts."
The Busan International Architectural Design Workshop has been held annually since 2003 as an international architectural event. It has established itself as an experimental design platform that seeks creative solutions to urban and architectural issues, fosters intergenerational collaboration, and shares international perspectives. This year's event was held under the theme "Connected and Communicated Sub-Center Station Area Urban Architecture Integrated Plan."
Eighteen teams, composed of nine architects from the Busan region and 72 architecture students from Korea and abroad, participated and proposed three-dimensional urban architectural masterplans for the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center, Busan Citizens Park, and the Dongcheon Stream area.
Chris van Duijn, the Asia representative partner of the world-renowned architectural firm OMA (based in Rotterdam, Netherlands), attracted attention by directly participating as a judge.
