Independently Developed 1,500-Horsepower Engine
Supplied to DAPA Through 2028
Securing New Growth Engines Since Late Last Year
HD Hyundai Infracore's independently developed 1,500-horsepower engine for the K2 tank has officially entered full-scale operational deployment through a large-scale supply contract. Only a handful of countries worldwide, including South Korea, are capable of stably producing and supplying high-performance tank engines domestically.
On July 8, HD Hyundai Infracore announced that it had recently signed a supply contract worth 92.3 billion won with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the K2 tank engine (DV27K). Under this agreement, HD Hyundai Infracore will deliver the engines in phases to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration from this year through 2028.
The engine to be delivered this time boasts an output of 1,500 horsepower, equivalent to the main battle tank engines of leading defense nations, and can propel the 56-ton K2 tank at a maximum speed of 70 km/h. Additionally, its design maximizes output and combustion efficiency by utilizing compressed air from exhaust gases and injecting it into the cylinders. Optimal structural engineering reduces vibration and evenly transmits power, enabling stable performance in battlefield conditions.
HD Hyundai Infracore succeeded in localizing the K2 tank engine in 2014 after a decade of research and development, and has been the exclusive supplier of K2 tank engines to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration since 2019. To secure new growth engines, the company invested 141.2 billion won in December last year to begin construction of defense ultra-large power generation engine and battery pack plants in Gunsan and Incheon, among other efforts.
Kim Joongsu, Head of the Engine Business Division at HD Hyundai Infracore, stated, "This K2 tank engine order is further proof of HD Hyundai's defense technology and reliability," adding, "We will continue to build a stable supply chain and focus on ongoing technological development to strengthen South Korea's defense industry competitiveness."
