Sacheon City Takes Proactive Measures for Water Supply in Preparation for Summer Drought

Measures to Minimize Crop Damage
Caused by Summer Drought

Sacheon City in South Gyeongsang Province has established water supply measures and taken proactive action to prepare for a prolonged summer drought this year, amid concerns about crop damage due to the recent ongoing heatwave and lack of rainfall.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the accumulated rainfall in Sacheon City over the past six months was 485.8 mm, which is 105.3% of the average for South Gyeongsang Province (461.3 mm). However, the accumulated rainfall over the past 15 days was only 14.3 mm, raising concerns about a short-term drought.


In response, Sacheon City is actively implementing the following measures: ▲Inspection and maintenance of agricultural infrastructure such as reservoirs, pumping stations, drainage stations, wells, intake weirs, and water pumps; operation of a drought response team to maintain preparedness and strengthening intensive monitoring of drought-prone areas ▲Promotion of water development projects, including the development of wells and the installation of water pipelines ▲Provision of water pumps and deployment of water-spraying vehicles, focusing on areas expected to suffer drought damage ▲Operation of a recirculating water supply system utilizing drainage water and thorough management of drainage gates at the ends of irrigation channels, among others.


An official from Sacheon City stated, "We are mobilizing all available resources and personnel to ensure the supply of agricultural water in response to the heatwave and drought," and added, "We will focus on maintaining the functionality of agricultural infrastructure and improving the efficiency of water resource reuse, with the goal of minimizing crop damage caused by the summer drought."
