Sets New Streaming Records in the United States

"Kpop Boy Group" Breaks Through Billboard, Becomes True Idols Movie still from "Kpop Demon Hunters." Netflix

The original soundtrack (OST) album for the Netflix animated film "Kpop Demon Hunters" ranked third on the main US Billboard album chart, the "Billboard 200."

On July 6 (local time), Billboard announced in a chart preview article that the album had climbed five spots from the previous week to reach third place on the chart dated July 12. This is the highest ranking for an OST released this year and marks the best performance by an animated film OST since "Encanto," which held the top spot for nine weeks in 2022.

In its second week, the album recorded a total of 62,000 album units. Of these, streaming equivalent albums (SEA) accounted for 56,000 units, a 108% increase from the previous week, while physical album sales reached 4,500 units, up 31%. Track equivalent albums (TEA), which convert digital downloads into album sales, amounted to 1,500 units.

The album's performance on streaming platforms is also noteworthy. As of July 4, the OST track "Your Idol," performed by the in-film idol group Saja Boys, ranked first on Spotify's "Daily Top Songs" chart in the United States. This is the first time a K-pop group has topped this chart, surpassing the previous highest rank of third place held by BTS's "Dynamite."

In addition, several other OST tracks such as "Golden" (third place), "Soda Pop" (ninth place), and "How It's Done" (twelfth place) entered the Spotify Global Top 50 chart.

"Kpop Demon Hunters" is a Netflix animated film that tells the story of the popular girl group Huntrix, who protect the human world, and the boy group Saja Boys, born from the world of evil spirits, as they compete over their true identities. The film was produced by Sony Pictures Animation and co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
