"If Not Given the Nobel Peace Prize, I'll Bomb Norway"... Trump Parody Spreads Online

Implying Pressure on the Country Selecting Nobel Laureates
Trump Has Never Made Such Remarks

A parody claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Norway if he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize is spreading online.

According to Euronews on July 7 (local time), posts making this claim have been appearing on social networking services (SNS) such as X (formerly Twitter). These posts include a quote attributed to President Trump: "I brought peace by blowing up (Iran's nuclear facilities). Give me the Nobel Prize before I bomb Norway too." The background features a photo of President Trump talking on a mobile phone. In addition, the top and bottom of the image display the phrase "Drop the Peaceful Bombs."

This is interpreted as suggesting that President Trump is pressuring Norway, the country that selects Nobel Peace Prize recipients, in light of last month's U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities and ceasefire pressure, which ended the "12-day war" between Iran and Israel. However, President Trump has never made such remarks in any official setting.

Previously, on June 26, a satirical outlet called the Borowitz Report published a similar story. It claimed that on the second day of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, President Trump accused Norway of treating him "very unfairly" and threatened to "eliminate" the country if he was not given the Peace Prize. The outlet is run by Andy Borowitz, a writer and comedian based in New Hampshire, United States.

Since his first term in office, President Trump has repeatedly insisted that the selection of Nobel Peace Prize recipients is politically biased and has claimed that he deserves the award. Last month, he posted on Truth Social, "No. Whatever the outcome of Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Iran, I will not receive the Nobel Peace Prize," adding, "But people know, and that's all that matters to me," in a message with a deeper meaning.

U.S. presidents have previously received the Nobel Peace Prize. Former President Theodore Roosevelt became the first American president to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War. Former President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919 for his role in founding the League of Nations (the predecessor to the United Nations) and ending World War I. In 2002, former President Jimmy Carter received the prize for decades of peaceful conflict resolution, promoting democracy, and humanitarian work. Former President Barack Obama was awarded the prize in 2009 in recognition of his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen diplomacy and international cooperation."
