Comprehensive Measures Against Heatwaves Also Strengthened
On the morning of July 7, Seongbuk District in Seoul held an "Emergency Safety Measures Inspection Meeting for Children in Blind Spots of Care" in response to a series of recent child fire accidents, taking proactive steps to address gaps in child care and safety.
This meeting was convened to prevent a recurrence of tragedies such as the "Busan Child Fire" incidents that occurred on June 24 and July 2.

Participants agreed on several measures to ensure the safety of children in the district, including monitoring at-risk families, conducting pre-inspections of the child safety network system, strengthening collaboration to actively identify and support vulnerable households, reorganizing immediate support response systems for care gaps, and enhancing disaster response safety management and organic cooperation with the police and fire departments.
Going forward, Seongbuk District plans to establish an integrated cooperation system for child safety with related organizations such as the fire department, police station, and education support office, and will review and strengthen crisis response and prevention measures.
The meeting was attended by Lee Seungro, mayor of Seongbuk District, the deputy mayor, heads of relevant departments addressing urgent issues such as nationwide center heads, child care gaps, emergency care, and child abuse, as well as about 30 other officials.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of severe heatwaves this year, Seongbuk District has established the "2025 Summer Heatwave Comprehensive Measures" and is operating a heatwave response system through September. The district is running cooling shelters at 262 locations, including senior centers and welfare facilities, has installed shade canopies at about 180 places, and is strengthening initiatives such as water-sharing refrigerators and welfare checks for those vulnerable to heatwaves. In addition, the district plans to continue fire prevention campaigns in cooperation with the fire department to address risks such as electrical appliance overload.
Lee Seungro, mayor of Seongbuk District, emphasized, "Child safety is the responsibility of our entire community," and added, "Seongbuk District must meticulously care for every child and establish a seamless protection system so that no child is exposed to danger." He further stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure the safety of children and residents by mobilizing all administrative resources, including cooperation with the police, fire department, and educational institutions."
