Vulnerable Groups Support Project...
7.5 Billion Won Invested
On July 7, Boseong County in South Jeolla Province announced that it had been selected for the Ministry of Environment's public project, the "2024 Regional Support Project for Climate Crisis Vulnerable Groups," and has begun operating a "cooling fog system" in traditional markets to respond to heat waves, as well as conducting a "carbon neutrality campaign."
The county secured a total project budget of 750 million won, including national funds, through this selection. Based on this, starting in 2025, cooling fog systems have been installed and put into operation at three locations: Nokchagol Boseong Hyangto Market, Beolgyo Five-Day Traditional Market, and Beolgyo Daily Market.
The "cooling fog" system sprays purified water in the form of fine mist, lowering the surrounding temperature by about 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. This system is effective in protecting climate crisis vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, who are easily exposed to high temperatures during the summer.
The county installed a total of about 100 mist fans in the markets at intervals of 10 meters. In sections where the height and spacing of the market building are narrow, nozzles were attached to the ceiling to complete the installation.
During the campaign held on this day, the county promoted everyday practices to reduce carbon, such as using reusable shopping bags and following energy-saving lifestyle guidelines. Carbon neutrality promotional materials were distributed to encourage citizen participation.
The operation of this system is expected not only to prevent heat wave damage among market users but also to have additional effects such as reducing fine dust and blocking flying insects. It is also anticipated to increase visitor satisfaction at traditional markets and have a positive impact on revitalizing local commercial districts.
Kim Cheolwoo, the county governor, said, "I hope that residents and merchants visiting the markets can spend the summer in a cooler and more comfortable environment thanks to the cooling fog. We will continue to promote climate crisis response and practical, everyday environmental improvement projects in the future."
