Eighteen-year-old pianist Sehyun Kim, who won the piano division at the Long-Thibaud International Competition in March, will perform at the Seoul Arts Center International Music Festival.
On July 7, the Seoul Arts Center (SAC) announced that it will hold the "2025 Seoul Arts Center International Music Festival" from August 5 to 10 at the Concert Hall, IBK Chamber Hall, and Recital Hall.
The Seoul Arts Center stated that the fifth edition of the International Music Festival will be held on the largest scale to date, further solidifying its status as a leading international classical music festival. This year’s festival will feature a total of 11 invited performances, including symphonic, chamber, baroque, and contemporary music, as well as performances by five selected ensembles.
Sehyun Kim will give a solo recital on August 8 at the IBK Chamber Hall. He will perform Liszt’s Piano Sonata, Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 3, Chopin’s Four Mazurkas and Scherzo No. 3, as well as Faur?’s Barcarolle No. 1 and Impromptu No. 2.
In addition to Sehyun Kim, there will be solo recitals by the Geister Duo, winners of the 2021 Munich ARD International Competition (August 7), and Zhang Haochen, winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Competition (August 9).
The opening and closing concerts will be conducted by Lawrence Renes, who served for many years as Music Director of the Royal Swedish Opera, leading the SAC Festival Orchestra. This year’s SAC Festival Orchestra will include Lim Chaemoon (double bass), a permanent member of the London Symphony Orchestra; Moon Taeguk (cello), winner of the 2014 Pablo Casals Competition; Alexandre Baty (trumpet), principal of the Munich Philharmonic; and Han Yeo-jin (flute), principal of the Hamburg NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
The opening concert will be a gala performance featuring only works by Richard Strauss, including "Ein Heldenleben" and the "Der Rosenkavalier Suite." For the closing concert, pianist Jan Lisiecki will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 "Titan" will be presented. Lisiecki is also scheduled to give a solo recital on August 9.
Other highlights include a joint performance by the National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA), the resident ensemble of Carnegie Hall, with violinist Clara-Jumi Kang (August 6); a collaboration between cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Connie Shih (August 8); and a concert by France’s Trio Wanderer, returning to the festival after two years (August 6).
There will also be baroque music performances. On August 10, Teotime Langlois de Swarte and Thomas Dunford will present a duo program themed "Lovers in Madness," exploring melancholy and passion in 17th-century England. On the same day, Lina Tur Bonet, Hong Seunga, and Arend Grosfeld will offer a beautiful period-instrument performance of early music. These performances will take place at the IBK Chamber Hall and Recital Hall, respectively.
