Yeongju City is launching a full-scale reading culture program for adults with developmental disabilities.
On July 7, Yeongju Hamang Library announced that it had been selected for the "2025 Reading Culture Program Support Project for Persons with Disabilities," organized by the National Library for the Disabled. As a result, the library will operate the "Maumae Picture Book" program from July 9 to September 10.
This project is a nationwide initiative aimed at expanding cultural opportunities for people with disabilities and providing tailored content for reading-vulnerable groups. This year, 120 public libraries across the country were selected. Yeongju City was chosen for the first time this year, laying the foundation for expanding inclusive reading in the local community.
The "Maumae Picture Book" program is being conducted in cooperation with the Yeongju branch of the Gyeongbuk Association for the Welfare of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and will involve 11 adult participants with developmental disabilities. The program consists of 14 sessions in total, starting with a library tour and instruction on how to use the library, followed by 12 reading sessions incorporating creative activities and board games, and one movie screening related to a book.
Through picture books, participants will encounter a variety of themes and emotions, and through a combination of post-reading activities, games, and movie viewing, they will develop communication and expressive skills, as well as promote emotional stability and cognitive improvement.
Kim Hojung, Director of Talent Development at Yeongju City, stated, "Being selected for this project will serve as a practical opportunity to improve cultural accessibility for people with disabilities in our region. We will continue to discover and develop inclusive reading programs so that the library can function as an open space for everyone."
