1.6km Section from Sinyongsan Station to Samgakji Station Renovated
Completion Ceremony for the "Yongridan-gil Companion Street Project"
Yongsan-gu in Seoul announced on July 7 that it held a completion ceremony for the "Yongridan-gil Companion Street Project" on July 4, unveiling the newly transformed, pedestrian-focused Yongridan-gil to the public.
Yongridan-gil is a popular destination in Yongsan, frequented by not only the MZ generation but also people of all ages, thanks to its unique restaurants, atmospheric cafes, proximity to Yongsan Family Park, and various museums. To enhance both the safety of visitors and the charm of the street, Yongsan-gu created the pedestrian-friendly "Yongridan-gil Companion Street" along a 1.6-kilometer section (from 148 Hangang-daero to 41 Hangang-daero 52-gil), stretching from Sinyongsan Station to Samgakji Station.
This project, which was funded with a total of 3.5 billion won from the district budget, began with the establishment of a master plan and design services in August 2023. After collecting feedback from local residents, full-scale construction began last year, and all work was completed last month.
The completion ceremony was held at the Healing Rest Area in front of the Won-Buddhism temple on Yongridan-gil, and was attended by about 100 people, including Park Heeyoung, mayor of Yongsan-gu, Kim Sungcheol, chairman of the Yongsan-gu Council, local residents, and nearby merchants.
Through this project, Yongsan-gu completely renovated the aging roads and created new sidewalks within the roadway to ensure pedestrian safety. In addition, the district significantly improved the road infrastructure by installing "intersection alert devices" to enhance visibility at intersections and "solar road studs" to improve nighttime walking conditions.
In particular, the "Healing Rest Area," created in harmony with three protected ginkgo trees that are over 180 years old, will serve not only as an urban oasis but also as a "cultural rest area" where residents and visitors can enjoy cultural events.
Park Heeyoung, mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, "The name 'Companion Street' signifies that people walk together, and that villages and people walk together," adding, "Yongridan-gil is an alley where emotion and community come together, and it is a space that embodies Yongsan's urban philosophy."
