Responding to Summer Seafood Snack Demand Amid High Inflation
Launching Deep-Sea Dried Squid Treasure at 7,500 Won in Collaboration with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives
Five Types of Seafood Snacks at 3,990 Won to Be Released Sequentially
On July 7, CU announced that it will launch a large lineup of value-for-money seafood snacks to meet the demand for summer drinking snacks amid high inflation.
As seafood prices have surged, leading to an increase in the price of seafood snacks, CU plans to introduce affordable options to help ease the burden of rising costs. According to Statistics Korea's "June Consumer Price Trends," seafood prices rose by 7.4%, marking the highest increase in a year and seven months since November 2023.
The "PBICK Deep-Sea Dried Squid Treasure" that CU is launching this month is a value-focused product that allows customers to enjoy a whole squid for 7,500 won. This product is currently offered at the lowest price among deep-sea dried squid products on the market, and is more than 20% cheaper compared to products of the same weight from other manufacturers sold by CU.
CU collaborated with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives to develop this product. The two companies were able to launch this product by proactively responding to unstable supplies of popular fish species and participating in price stabilization efforts, minimizing distribution margins and marketing costs.
CU has also prepared a payment promotion to enhance customer benefits. Throughout this month, all items in the CU ultra-low price PB Treasure Series, including the PBICK Deep-Sea Dried Squid Treasure, can be purchased at a total discount of 40% when paid with the CU Npay Card?20% basic card discount plus an additional 20% promotional discount.
Additionally, CU will sequentially launch five types of ultra-value seafood snacks, each priced at 3,990 won, featuring squid, pollack, and horse mackerel. The "3,990 Macbanseok Soft Squid" in two varieties (Original and Spicy) is noted for its moist and chewy texture. CU will also introduce three differentiated seafood snacks with tangy sauces to stimulate appetites weary from the summer heat.
The Pollack Garlic Olive features shredded pollack in stick form, enhanced with garlic and olive flavors for added depth, while the Lemon Squid Legs and Spicy Yuzu Horse Mackerel also deliver a refreshing taste, making them ideal pairings for beer snacks.
Lee Geunwoong, processed foods team MD at BGF Retail, said, "Despite the ongoing high inflation, convenience stores are playing a key role in stabilizing everyday prices by consistently introducing value-for-money products that leverage their unique customer accessibility and enhanced customer benefits," adding, "CU will continue to do its best to contribute to price stabilization by offering products with high quality and strong price competitiveness."
