Expresses Intent to Run for People Power Party Leadership
Diagnoses "Crisis Situation for Party and Nation"
Calls for Conservative Revolution and Transformation on Par with Founding a New Party
Former Congressman Jang Sungmin announced on July 6 that he is seriously considering running for the leadership of the People Power Party. Jang stated, "The nation is facing a crisis under the Lee Jaemyung administration," and added, "I am contemplating running for party leader with the mindset of becoming a grain of wheat to save the party and rescue the country."
On this day, through social networking services (SNS), Jang assessed, "Right now, the Republic of Korea is facing a national crisis under the Lee Jaemyung administration," and argued, "The Lee Jaemyung administration, which began with all kinds of criminal suspicions, has in itself damaged the dignity and authority of the nation, and externally, it has led to a decline in national credibility. Korea's international reputation is in decline."
He mentioned the special investigations into insurrection, the Chae Sangbyeong case, and Kim Keonhee, diagnosing that "domestic politics is carrying out political retaliation (division) under the name of various special investigations." He went on to criticize the current government's foreign policy, saying, "Under the name of pragmatic national interest, it is moving toward anti-American and pro-China (loss of national interest) policies," and emphasized, "We must correct the Lee Jaemyung administration, which is leading the country in the wrong direction, and set things right so that Korea's growth can continue."
He further described the livelihood recovery consumption coupons as "cash handout-style populism," and evaluated the suspension of the president's trial as a destruction of the rule of law. Additionally, he criticized the situation in the National Assembly as an act of tyranny by the Democratic Party of Korea.
In contrast, regarding the People Power Party, he stated, "Under any circumstances, new leadership must emerge that can truly prevent national division caused by political retaliation while advocating for national unity." He continued, "We must spark a new political revolution and a great conservative revolution to establish the party as a new visionary and alternative party for the people. The People Power Party has reached a critical moment when it must be reborn as a nationwide party, a metropolitan area party, and a party for the youth in their 20s and 30s." He also argued, "The upcoming People Power Party convention must bring about a dramatic and revolutionary transformation akin to the founding of a new party; otherwise, the party will face an existential crisis."
Jang joined the People Power Party in August 2021 and ran in the party's primary for the 20th presidential election but was eliminated. He later served as the Director of Future Strategy Planning in the Presidential Secretariat under the Yoon Sukyeol administration. In April last year, he ran for office in Ansan Sangnok-gu Gap during the 22nd general election but was defeated. Currently, the People Power Party is operating under an emergency committee system following the passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Sukyeol in December last year and the defeat in the presidential election. The party convention is expected to be held around August.
