This event brought together around 700 people, including individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and related officials from various regions of North Gyeongsang Province. It served as a platform for communication and solidarity, aiming to strengthen self-reliance and promote the rights of people with developmental disabilities.
On the first day, July 3, the 'Gyeongbuk Developmental Disabilities Self-Advocacy Contest' was held at the Batmeori Lifelong Education Center. Individuals with developmental disabilities, who had been selected through regional preliminaries, took the stage to present their lives, thoughts, and dreams, confidently asserting their rights and expressing their voices.
The Self-Advocacy Contest is an annual event designed to improve the communication skills and self-esteem of people with developmental disabilities. That evening, a welcome party was held to foster friendship and unity among participants, featuring a variety of programs such as performances and recreational activities that received enthusiastic responses.
On July 4, in celebration of 'Day of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities,' the main commemorative ceremony took place at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education Cultural Center. During the ceremony, individuals and organizations who contributed to the advancement of welfare for people with developmental disabilities were recognized with awards. Officials from Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province, and related institutions also attended, adding significance to the event.
In particular, an exhibition of 'Three-Line Writing' works, created by 160 individuals with developmental disabilities, was held in the lobby of the event venue, attracting much attention.
This participatory exhibition allowed people with developmental disabilities to share their feelings, experiences, and daily lives with the local community through their own short writings, resonating with and moving many visitors.
After the commemorative ceremony, participants took part in local exploration programs, such as a cruise experience and tours of major attractions in Pohang, to enjoy the city’s culture and nature. Through these activities, participants were able to break away from their daily routines, enjoy new environments, and create meaningful memories.
Pyeon Jun, Director of Welfare, said, "This contest was not just an event, but a truly meaningful occasion centered on the rights and participation of people with developmental disabilities. I hope this will serve as an opportunity for the public and private sectors to join forces in realizing welfare centered on the individuals themselves."
