Elon Musk Announces Launch of 'America Party'... Moves to Break with Trump Yonhap News

Tesla CEO Elon Musk officially announced the launch of a new political party on July 5 (local time), the day after Independence Day in the United States, marking his full-fledged entry into the political arena. Musk, who recently had public clashes with President Donald Trump over major legislation, is now causing a stir by going so far as to establish a political party.

On this day, Musk stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "You want a new party, and now you will have one," adding, "The 'America Party' was founded today to reclaim your freedom."

He went on to explain the purpose of founding the new party, saying, "When it comes to the waste and corruption that is bankrupting our country, we are living not in a democracy but under a 'one-party system'." He argued that both the Republican and Democratic parties are fundamentally no different as entrenched powers.

The previous day, on Independence Day, Musk had foreshadowed the party's launch by posting an online poll asking for opinions on the creation of a new party. He later stated, "Focusing on 2 to 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts is one way to make this happen," emphasizing that, "In a situation where the seat margins remain as narrow as they are now, votes from a minor party can play a decisive role in controversial legislation."

During the 2024 presidential election, Musk actively supported President Trump and built trust with him. However, their relationship soured recently when Musk publicly opposed the 'Big Beautiful Bill,' a major piece of legislation promoted by Trump that includes large-scale tax cuts and border security policies.

The launch of Musk's new party is being interpreted as a move aimed at the midterm elections. It appears to be a strategy to capture the votes of centrist and independent voters and to hold the 'casting vote' in Congress as a third party.
