Support Measures Established for Farmers' Livelihoods and More
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, commented on the passage of the "Act on the Transition and Support of the Hanwoo Industry for Carbon Neutrality" in the National Assembly on July 3, stating, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the law is implemented effectively in the field."
The Carbon Neutral Hanwoo Industry Support Act was first proposed in 2014 as the Hanwoo Industry Development Act and has passed after 11 years. Its significance lies in establishing a comprehensive and systematic basis for national-level support, aiming to secure both the livelihood of Hanwoo farmers and the competitiveness of the Hanwoo industry while responding to the era of carbon neutrality.
The law includes practical support measures such as establishing a comprehensive five-year development plan for the Hanwoo industry, creating a system for the protection of Hanwoo genetics, and securing grounds for providing subsidies to farmers.
In particular, support for transitioning to environmentally friendly livestock farming is expected to become a new turning point for strengthening the competitiveness of Hanwoo farmers.
Jeonnam Province, which has the second-largest Hanwoo farming region in the country, plans to actively pursue a variety of projects to reduce the burden on farmers and establish a sustainable, eco-friendly livestock industry based on the enactment of this law.
Governor Kim stated, "We will actively support Hanwoo farmers in establishing an environmentally friendly production base, develop action plans to reduce carbon emissions, and simultaneously implement a range of supplementary measures to help preserve farmers' incomes."
He added, "I extend my sincere gratitude to the members of the National Assembly and government officials who worked hard for the passage of this bill, and above all, to the Hanwoo farmers who have worked tirelessly in the field."
