President Lee Jae Myung is considering dispatching special envoys to major countries such as the United States, Japan, and China this month.
On July 4, the presidential office stated, "It is true that the government is pursuing the dispatch of special envoys to major countries," and added, "It is difficult to disclose specific details until discussions with the respective countries are concluded and an official announcement is made."
The presidential office is reportedly coordinating a preliminary list of special envoys to be sent to major countries and is currently in talks with the relevant governments. In addition to the United States, Japan, and China, the list is said to include the European Union (EU), France, Australia, India, and Canada, totaling around ten countries.
It has also been reported that the government is deliberating whether to send a special envoy to Russia, which is currently engaged in the war in Ukraine.
Previously, former President Yoon Suk Yeol, during his transition period, sent "policy consultation delegations" with the status of special envoys to the United States and Japan. Former President Moon Jae In dispatched special envoys to the United States, China, Japan, Russia, and the EU at the beginning of his term, while former President Park Geun Hye sent special envoys to the United States and China during her transition period.
