Reports have emerged that the Lebanese government is discussing a plan to disarm Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.
According to Al Akhbar, a pro-Hezbollah outlet, on July 4, a Lebanese official stated, "Hezbollah must take the initiative to hand over its weapons to the state," adding, "Before discussing the procedures and timetable for the transfer of weapons, it will be necessary to reassure Hezbollah supporters, provide security guarantees to Hezbollah officials, and offer political guarantees to its leaders."
This official explained that they recently visited the United States and met with senior U.S. officials, as well as Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, and received support for efforts to disarm Hezbollah.
Another foreign media outlet, citing multiple Lebanese sources, reported that "Hezbollah has begun a strategic review following its war with Israel," and that "the group is considering options ranging from reducing its role as an armed organization to a complete disarmament."
It is known that Hezbollah is considering relinquishing certain weapons, such as missiles and drones?which Israel regards as security threats to its country?on the condition that Israel withdraws its forces from southern Lebanon.
