An incident occurred at Hansung University when an exhibit featuring imagery resembling the Rising Sun Flag and containing hate speech was installed and subsequently removed. The university has imposed the highest level of disciplinary action, expulsion, on the student responsible for the installation.
On July 4, Hansung University announced that a disciplinary committee had been convened regarding the unauthorized display of an unapproved exhibit, resulting in the expulsion of the student involved.
According to Hansung University, at around 11:10 p.m. on the 3rd of last month, several exhibits were installed inside a university building in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. The displays featured images that appeared to combine the Taegeukgi (the national flag of South Korea) with the Rising Sun Flag, a symbol of Japanese imperialism, and included hate speech such as "Disgusting Joseonjing (a derogatory term for Koreans) know no shame."
The exhibits spread rapidly through the university's online community, sparking controversy. Hansung University confirmed that the exhibits had been installed by a male student enrolled in the Department of Painting. The university also stated that the works had not been approved and that the student voluntarily removed the displays approximately 40 minutes after installation, at around 11:50 p.m.
The next day, on June 4, the university formed an investigative committee to look into the incident and conducted an inquiry, including hearing the student's explanation.
