The Gijang Ocean Blue Rail construction project, a key tourism infrastructure initiative being promoted by Gijang County (Governor Jung Jongbok), has recently passed the central investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, paving the way for full-scale implementation.
This project is part of the "Southern Region Metropolitan Tourism Development Plan" led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It is a large-scale initiative to create an eco-friendly tourism hub along the abandoned Donghae Nambu Line from Jwacheon Station to Wonnae Station in Jangan-eup, as well as in the area surrounding Wonnae Port.
Gijang County plans to invest a total of 47.9 billion KRW by 2028 to sequentially establish distinctive tourism infrastructure, including the eco-friendly ecological rest area "Eco Forest," the "Ocean Overbridge" with sea views, the tourist cruise dock "Eco Station," and a media art experience center.
With the project passing the central investment review, it has become possible to secure national funding for 2024. The county aims to complete detailed design in 2026, begin construction in 2027, and finish the project by 2028.
Upon completion, it will be possible to establish a maritime cruise route connecting Jangsaengpo Port in Ulsan and Gijang, which is expected to play a pivotal role in revitalizing linked tourism throughout the southern region.
Governor Jung Jongbok stated, "The Gijang Ocean Blue Rail project is a major initiative that will bring a significant leap forward for the region's marine tourism. With the project having passed the central investment review, we will swiftly proceed with securing national funding, design, and construction to ensure smooth implementation without delays."
