Hyundai Motor Group Achieves Top Scores in U.S. Safety Assessments for Five Consecutive Years
All Electric Models Receive Five Stars in Euro NCAP
"Safe Car" Philosophy Drives Global Sales Growth
Hyundai Motor Group has consistently increased its global sales over the past five years, achieving top scores in crash safety assessments in the United States and Europe. As the company has demonstrated its safety with quantifiable results in evaluations with stricter standards, the perception among consumers that Hyundai offers "safe and high-quality vehicles" has become more widespread.
According to industry sources on July 4, Hyundai Motor Group's overseas market sales rose steadily from approximately 5.4 million units in 2021 to 5.61 million in 2022, 5.97 million in 2023, and 5.98 million in 2024. In the first half of this year alone, the company sold about 3.02 million units, maintaining its growth compared to the same period last year. A Hyundai Motor Group representative explained, "Our unwavering commitment to safety as the top priority, along with continuous research and development to secure world-class safety, has made a significant contribution to the increase in sales."
Hyundai Motor Group's major models have been recognized for top-level safety by leading new car safety evaluation organizations in the United States and Europe, such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
In the IIHS crash safety assessments, a total of 106 Hyundai Motor Group models have been selected for the Top Safety Pick (TSP) and Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) ratings?which indicate the highest level of safety?over the five-year period since 2021. This is the highest figure among global automobile groups.
Hyundai Motor Group has continued to prove its top-level safety by earning TSP or higher ratings for 28 models in 2021, 26 in 2022, 15 in 2023, 22 in 2024, and 15 in 2025. In particular, it is considered significant that Hyundai Motor Group has had the most models selected for TSP or higher ratings for two consecutive years, even as the IIHS has strengthened its crash safety assessment standards every year.
In Euro NCAP, the leading new car safety assessment program in Europe, Hyundai Motor Group has also listed all of its dedicated electric vehicles currently on sale among those receiving the highest "five-star (★★★★★)" rating. The electric vehicles that have received Euro NCAP's top rating include Hyundai's IONIQ 5 (2021) and IONIQ 6 (2022); Kia's EV6 (2022), EV9 (2023), and EV3 (2025); and Genesis' GV60 (2022)?in other words, every electric vehicle the group has launched in the European market.
To achieve these results, Hyundai Motor Group has focused its technological development on minimizing passenger injury in unavoidable accidents, through thousands of crash tests and real-world accident analyses, as well as robust body structures and optimal safety devices.
Before launching a vehicle, Hyundai Motor Group conducts more than 100 crash mode tests per model, including frontal, offset (partial frontal), car-to-car, side, and rear tests that replicate real-world accidents. Using supercomputers, the company also performs an average of over 3,000 virtual crash simulations per model.
Based on these research results, Hyundai Motor Group has significantly enhanced overall vehicle safety by designing car bodies with multi-frame structures to disperse energy in a crash, and by significantly increasing body rigidity through the expanded use of ultra-high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel plates, and structural adhesives.
In addition, the company has made a variety of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) standard, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Prevention Assist, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, enabling safer and more convenient driving.
In his New Year's message in January 2021, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung emphasized the importance of safety, stating, "Only when we pursue perfection by refusing to compromise on quality and safety can our customers truly trust us."
