New Continuing Jobless Claims Reach 1.964 Million, Highest in Four Years
Last week, the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the United States fell short of market expectations, reaching the lowest level in six weeks.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor on July 3 (local time), new unemployment benefit claims for the week of June 22 to 28 totaled 233,000.
This figure was slightly below the market forecast of 240,000, marking the lowest level in six weeks since mid-May. It also represents a decrease of 4,000 compared to the previous week’s total of 237,000.
The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims, which counts those claiming benefits for two weeks or more, stood at 1,964,000 for the week of June 15 to 21, unchanged from the previous week. This exceeded the expert forecast of 1,960,000 and marked the highest level in four years since the fall of 2021.
As concerns about an economic slowdown have intensified due to President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies, Wall Street is closely monitoring employment indicators along with inflation data.
