Minsu Cho, Chosun University Undergraduate Researcher, Wins Outstanding Paper Award at Spring Conference Minsu Cho, undergraduate researcher at Chosun University.

Chosun University announced on July 3 that Minsu Cho, an undergraduate researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, recently received the Outstanding Poster Paper Award at the 2025 Spring Conference of the Honam Branch of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Minsu Cho presented on the topic of "A Numerical Study on EIVC and LIVC Strategies of the Miller Cycle in Small Gasoline Engines," discussing the performance and exhaust emission characteristics according to intake valve manipulation.

Recently, due to global warming and environmental issues, research on exhaust gas reduction technology has emerged as a worldwide challenge. In particular, the Miller cycle is drawing attention as an optimal operating strategy because it can reduce nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide simply by controlling the intake valve, without the need for after-treatment devices.

The core of this study is the quantification of intake amount and mechanical work by manipulating the intake valve, and the systematic comparison and analysis of engine performance and emission characteristics. Through this, the research identified operating conditions that minimize exhaust emissions without degrading performance.

This variable valve technology is an economical method that can be immediately applied to systems without additional hardware, and is expected to improve the efficiency of the entire system through optimization.

Minsu Cho stated, "I am very pleased to receive such a meaningful award, and I would like to thank Professor Jungsoo Park and the senior researchers and colleagues in the lab who assisted with the analysis. I will continue to develop my research further and strive to achieve even better results in the future."
