After Announcing Retirement from Politics, Recently Hints at a Comeback
"A New Conservative Party Will Replace the People Power Party"
Former Daegu Mayor Hong Junpyo stated, "The root cause of the anger toward the prosecution under the Lee Jaemyung administration originates from Yoon Sukyeol and Han Donghoon," adding, "It is time for the prosecution to pay for the eight years of karma together with those two."
On July 3, Hong wrote on his social networking service (SNS), "It has already been eight years since two mere political prosecutors have manipulated the country." He continued, "Starting in 2017 as Moon Jaein's hunting dogs, they launched so-called political investigations into state affairs manipulation, resulting in the wrongful imprisonment of hundreds of people, five suicides during the process, and unjust imprisonment for many, including cases such as the acquittals of Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang Seungtae and Chairman Lee Jaeyong, all due to their reckless wielding of power." He further criticized, "They were not the best prosecutors in Joseon, but rather the best gum in Joseon, and the conservative media that praised them should not avoid responsibility either." The nickname "the best prosecutor in Joseon" refers to Han's reputed investigative skills.
Hong also said, "It has now been three years since they seized power by using political prosecutors and manipulated the country together," and asserted, "Now, it is time for the prosecution to pay for the eight years of karma together with those two." Furthermore, Hong emphasized, "Senior members of the People Power Party who condoned this will also find it difficult to avoid responsibility," and urged, "Let's take this opportunity to settle what needs to be settled and start anew." He concluded, "We must build a strong nation that is no longer shaken by political prosecutors or factional logic." Amid these remarks, speculation is growing that Hong's call to "settle and start anew" suggests the founding of a new conservative party to replace the People Power Party.
Previously, on July 2, Hong also responded to a question from a supporter on "Dream of Youth," his communication channel with supporters, who said, "It seems the flame of life in the People Power Party is about to go out," and asked, "Will there be growing demand for a new conservative party?" Hong replied, "An alternative party to the People Power Party will emerge," and cited the phrase "Mulgeukpilban" (when something reaches its extreme, it is bound to reverse). He argued that, since the People Power Party is currently failing to fulfill its role as a conservative party, a new conservative party will take its place.
