The Chungnam Provincial Forest Resources Research Institute announced on July 3 that it has designated six flagship species among the flora and fauna inhabiting Deoksan, Chilgapsan, and Daedunsan Provincial Parks, marking the first such designation among provincial parks nationwide.

Flagship species are symbolic organisms that reflect the ecological, geographical, and cultural characteristics of a specific area.

The flagship species for each park are as follows: Deoksan Provincial Park - Northern Goshawk (bird), Anemone narcissiflora (plant); Chilgapsan Provincial Park - Eurasian Sparrowhawk (bird), Thalictrum rochebrunianum (plant); Daedunsan Provincial Park - Crayfish (amphibian/crustacean), Stewartia pseudocamellia (plant).

The designated flagship species were finalized after receiving recommendations for 15 candidate species for each provincial park from the National Park Research Institute, conducting surveys of local residents and visitors, and undergoing deliberation by the Provincial Park Committee on June 23.

The research institute plans to promote park-specific projects in the future, such as producing promotional content and operating visitor programs utilizing the flagship species.

Kim Youngmyung, Director of the Environment and Forestry Bureau of the province, stated, "We hope this will serve as an opportunity to enhance the symbolism of the ecological resources of provincial parks and to explore sustainable environmental management and wise utilization strategies." He added, "Through the development of content utilizing flagship species, we will strengthen cooperation with local communities and manage these resources more systematically."
