According to the city on July 3, the smart shade shelters were installed mainly at major intersections with high pedestrian traffic, such as in front of Sintaein Station and at the Suseong-dong Jugong Apartment intersection.
The shelters are equipped with a system that automatically detects temperature and wind speed, allowing the shades to open and close on their own. This feature has drawn attention as a practical heatwave response facility, enabling vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly and students to rest in the shade while waiting at crosswalks.
In addition to the smart shade shelters, the city is also implementing various other measures to reduce citizen inconvenience and health risks caused by the recurring heatwaves each year.
Currently, heatwave response policies such as expanded operation of cooling shelters and the provision of ice water are being carried out in parallel. In the future, the city plans to further expand the installation of smart shade shelters, focusing on areas that are particularly vulnerable to heatwaves.
Mayor Lee Haksoo stated, "The installation of smart shade shelters is expected to provide practical help in reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses that may occur while walking." He added, "We will continue to create an urban environment that can actively respond to the climate crisis, always prioritizing the safety and comfort of our citizens."
