The Chungnam Office of Education has dramatically improved its evaluation method for Innovation Schools, moving away from one-sided assessments by the evaluation team. By operating in this new way, the Office is now being recognized by schools for having innovated even the evaluation process itself.
On July 2, the Office announced that it had changed not only the terminology from "Innovation School Evaluation" but also the approach, adopting the slogan "Everyday Growth" and transforming the process into a "School Open Day." On this day, not only the evaluation team but also teachers from nearby areas who wish to participate are invited to attend.
The evaluation method itself has also been significantly improved. Now, Innovation Schools present their strengths and shareable practices, allowing participants to empathize and share in their achievements. Challenges are discussed and comforted, and future activities are jointly discussed and prepared, making the process a time for collective growth.
Starting with Geumsan Sanggok Elementary School on May 7 and continuing through the evaluation of Seocheon Biin Elementary School on July 2, a total of 34 Innovation Schools have undergone comprehensive evaluations using this method. The approach has received positive feedback and is drawing attention as a new evaluation model.
The composition of the evaluation team has also been improved. Retired teachers who have been dedicated to school innovation are appointed as head and deputy head of the team. The team also includes one research teacher who analyzes the school's positive activities, one vice principal recommended by a regional council, and one teacher. They spend the entire day at the school, including sharing meals, to closely observe the details of the school and its students.
In particular, before visiting the school, the evaluation team receives and analyzes the school's key concerns in advance. They then work together to consider possible solutions and observe the sharing of everyday classes, which has been well received.
Yoon Pyojung, Director of Policy Planning at the Chungnam Office of Education, who planned these groundbreaking improvements to the Innovation School evaluation method, stated, "In the future, we must establish a system where local communities learn and grow together." He added, "Through School Open Days, we will continue to foster activities where we unite, cooperate, learn from each other, and grow together."
