Kim Jeyoung LG Energy Solution CTO: "Leading with 'Premium Patents' by Compressing and Accumulating Time"

Keynote Speech at the Battery Insight Conference on July 2
LG Energy Solution Presents Battery Technology and Patent Strategy

"A patent is what makes differentiated, irreplaceable technology even more valuable. LG Energy Solution will lead the battery industry by creating 'premium patents.'"

On July 2, Kim Jeyoung, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Energy Solution, emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) while making this statement at the 'Battery Insight Conference 2025' held at Osco in Cheongju, Chungbuk.

Kim Jeyoung LG Energy Solution CTO: "Leading with 'Premium Patents' by Compressing and Accumulating Time" At around 10:30 a.m. on the 2nd, Kim Jeyoung, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of LG Energy Solution, explained LG Energy Solution's future strategy at the 'Battery Insight Conference 2025' held at Osco in Cheongju, Chungbuk. Kim stated, "If the same amount of time is given, time is on China's side," and added, "We need to use the same amount of time more efficiently. We must compress time through technological innovation and AI-based research and development (R&D)." He continued, "I believe the way to accumulate this compressed time is through IP. We will use time efficiently, focusing on four key keywords."

Previously, LG Energy Solution launched a new licensing (patent usage agreement) program last year that integrated lithium-ion battery technology patents from Tulip Innovation (Tulip), a patent management company (NPE), and Panasonic. The patent portfolio managed by Tulip consists of approximately 1,500 patent families and more than 5,000 patents held by LG Energy Solution and Panasonic. This is currently the largest patent portfolio available for licensing in the battery industry and can be used by all battery manufacturers worldwide.

Kim said, "For the battery industry to achieve sustainable development, there must be respect for the original innovators," and added, "I believe this is a legitimate act that can create an environment where latecomers can also develop technology comfortably."

He also stated, "We aim to spread a culture that respects IP and to build an innovative patent ecosystem in the battery market," and added, "Through Tulip's patent licensing, we will promote fair competition in the market and take the lead in creating a sound battery ecosystem by upholding the patent system."

As of last year, LG Energy Solution held approximately 42,000 registered patents and about 75,000 patent applications worldwide, maintaining technological superiority across all areas, including materials, cells, packs, battery management systems (BMS), and manufacturing processes.

Kim expressed confidence, saying, "LG Energy Solution's patents are overwhelmingly number one globally, both quantitatively and qualitatively. While there are few cases of domestic companies making proper use of patents, LG Energy Solution is taking the lead in utilizing them."

On this day, Kim categorized LG Energy Solution's strategy into four areas: ▲technological innovation ▲AI and digital transformation (DX)-based R&D efficiency ▲global R&D ▲IP strategy.

Kim said, "LG Energy Solution is leading the development of various next-generation battery technologies in line with rapid market changes and needs," introducing the development of all-solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, bipolar batteries, and sodium-ion batteries.

He also explained that the company is shortening the development period for new materials by automating the research process from sample receipt to data processing. Material development based on AI and DX is underway, and automation equipment has been developed for test cell manufacturing, significantly reducing researchers' repetitive manual work time. In addition, LG Energy Solution is developing innovative technologies in collaboration with various universities, research institutes, and startups both domestically and internationally, including Seoul National University, KAIST, and POSTECH.
