HanmiGlobal to Discuss Alternative Construction Methods for Apartments at HG Tech Forum

Free Admission with Online Registration on a First-Come, First-Served Basis

HanmiGlobal, a construction project management (PM) company, announced on July 1 that it will hold the 'HG Tech Forum' at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on July 10. This year's forum is themed 'Apartment Construction in an Era of Transition: The Current Status and Prospects of Alternative Construction Methods.' The HG Tech Forum is an annual construction technology event organized by HanmiGlobal since 2023. It serves as a platform for major industry stakeholders and experts to share technological issues within the construction sector.

This year's forum will highlight the limitations of the traditional reinforced concrete (RC) on-site casting method and introduce off-site construction (OSC) based methods as alternatives. While the RC method is relatively cost-effective, it has been criticized for various issues such as inter-floor noise, quality inconsistencies, construction delays, and safety risks. Recently, rising raw material prices and labor costs have also increased the economic burden associated with this method.

The forum will feature presentations on various alternative methods, including the precast concrete (PC) method, which involves assembling factory-produced concrete components on-site, as well as modular, steel frame, and timber construction techniques.

The first session will be a keynote speech by Oh Juhun, Head of the Public Housing Division at Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), on the topic 'Crisis and Opportunity in Apartment Construction: Why OSC Methods?' This will be followed by Seol Changwoo, Vice President of Yoochang ENC, a leading domestic modular architecture firm, who will discuss the current status and future plans for modular housing development. Ahn Yonghan, a professor at Hanyang University, will present on 'High-Rise Apartment Buildings Using Modular PC.'

There will also be a presentation on steel frame construction methods. Park Seojin, Executive Director at HanmiGlobal, will address the potential and challenges of applying steel frame construction to apartment buildings, focusing on inter-floor noise reduction, seismic design, and the feasibility of long-life housing. The final presentation will be given by Lee Wonhyeong, Head of the Gaewoonsan Village Street Housing Redevelopment Association in Jongam-dong, who will explain the carbon neutrality potential of timber apartments through a real-world case study.

Lee Gukheon, Chief Technology Officer at HanmiGlobal, stated, "We aim to build consensus on the need to introduce new construction methods that go beyond the limitations of the existing RC method, and to seek practical solutions for improving productivity, shortening construction periods, ensuring quality, and enhancing safety in the construction industry." He added, "We hope this forum will serve as a turning point for innovation in apartment construction by discussing the technical challenges and solutions of various alternative construction methods."

This event is open to anyone involved in construction-related public institutions, contractors, developers, redevelopment associations, and academia, free of charge. Pre-registration is required through the HanmiGlobal website. Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
