What Is the Top Policy Priority for Gyeonggi Education?... Residents, Students, and Faculty Choose "Character Education," Parents Prefer "Academic Achievement Improvement"

Residents of Gyeonggi Province and members of the Gyeonggi education community selected "character education" and "curriculum for academic achievement improvement" as the top policy priorities for Gyeonggi education.


This result aligns with the consistent efforts of Superintendent Lim Taehee over the past three years to communicate with educational stakeholders and pursue the goal of Gyeonggi education: "nurturing future talent with fundamental character and basic competencies."


The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education combined the results of a telephone interview survey of 1,521 Gyeonggi residents aged 19 or older and an online public opinion survey of a total of 15,415 participants, including 8,735 students, 3,097 parents, and 3,583 faculty members. According to these results, residents identified Gyeonggi character education (32%) as the most necessary policy for students. This was followed by the curriculum for academic achievement improvement (19%) and digital citizenship education (9%).

Students also chose Gyeonggi character education (18%) as their top priority, and responded that self-selected meal programs (18%) and the curriculum for academic achievement improvement (9%) are also necessary policies.


Faculty members placed Gyeonggi character education (25%) as their first priority, followed by the curriculum for academic achievement improvement (22%) and the resolution of overcrowded classes and oversized schools (20%) as important policies for Gyeonggi education.


In contrast, parents considered the curriculum for academic achievement improvement (31%) to be the most important. This was followed by Gyeonggi character education (23%) and customized education utilizing High Learning (11%).


At a press conference marking his third anniversary in office on June 23, Superintendent Lim Taehee emphasized, "The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education is working to create the conditions and methods necessary for future education so that schools can autonomously provide balanced education, with the goal of nurturing future talent with fundamental character and basic competencies."


This public opinion survey was conducted by Research & Research from April 18 to May 11. The sampling error at a 95% confidence level was ±2.51 percentage points for residents, ±1.05 percentage points for students, ±1.76 percentage points for parents, and ±1.64 percentage points for faculty members.
