The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on July 1 that it will accept public nominations for candidates for the "2nd Local 100" until July 31.
The Local 100 is a project that selects and promotes local cultural attractions and content in order to discover the unique cultural charms of different regions and to widely publicize the value of regional culture. In 2023, out of 461 candidates recommended by 226 local governments nationwide and the Ministry's 2030 Advisory Group, 100 were selected for the inaugural "Local 100."
The newly selected "2nd Local 100" for this year has greatly expanded opportunities for public participation, allowing citizens to directly recommend candidates and take part in the selection process. Eligible candidates are distinctive cultural resources based on local culture. In addition to everyday cultural spaces such as museums, cultural bookstores, traditional markets, and cultural streets, a wide range of unique local cultural content?including local festivals, performances, experiential content, and regional brands?are all eligible for nomination. Anyone, regardless of age or region, can submit a recommendation. Local governments across the country can also recommend candidates.
The Ministry will conduct a document review, a public online vote, and an expert evaluation of the candidates, and plans to announce the final selection of the "2nd Local 100" at the end of this year. Furthermore, in 2026 and 2027, the Ministry will actively promote the "2nd Local 100" to showcase the appeal of Korea's representative local cultural resources.
Nominations for the 2nd Local 100 (July 1?31) are accepted through the official website. Participants who thoughtfully recommend candidates by highlighting the value and significance of local culture will be entered into a drawing to win prizes such as tickets to the Jarasum Jazz Festival and the Cheongju Craft Biennale, offering opportunities to enjoy local culture.
Song Yunseok, Director of Regional Culture Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "Through the 2nd Local 100, which is selected together with the public, we hope to widely promote the diversity and value of regional culture, and to discover distinctive cultural resources that instill pride in local residents and revitalize their communities."
