CPC Membership Surpasses 100 Million... 7.1% of Total Population

1.1% Increase in One Year
White-collar Workers 35.4%, Workers and Farmers 32.7%
Women 30.9%, College Degree or Higher 57.6%

The number of Communist Party of China (CPC) members has surpassed 100 million for the first time.


On June 30, Yonhap News, citing the state-run Xinhua News Agency, reported that the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee announced party membership statistics on the eve of the party's founding anniversary. As of December 31 of the previous year, the total number of party members stood at 100,271,000. This represents an increase of 1,086,000 members (1.1%) from the end of 2023, when the figure was 99,185,000. It is the first time that the number of CPC members has exceeded 100 million.

CPC members accounted for approximately 7.1% of China's total population of 1,408,280,000 last year. The annual growth rate of party membership slowed slightly, recording 1.4% in 2022, 1.2% in 2023, and 1.1% last year, but still maintained a growth rate in the 1% range. In addition, the number of grassroots party organizations, which are spread throughout villages, enterprises, and other areas, totaled 5.25 million, an increase of 74,000 organizations (1.4%) compared to 2023.


By occupation, workers and farmers accounted for 32.7% of all party members (32,783,000), while white-collar workers made up 35.4% (35,549,000). Specifically, there were 6,639,000 workers and 26,144,000 people engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, or fisheries. Among white-collar occupations, there were 16,394,000 professional and technical personnel in enterprises, 11,563,000 management personnel, and 7,592,000 staff in party and government institutions. Additionally, there were 2,622,000 students, 7,849,000 people in other occupations, and 21,469,000 retirees.


Among all party members, women numbered 30,995,000, accounting for 30.9% of the total, a 0.5 percentage point increase from the previous year. In addition, ethnic minorities were counted at 7,734,000, or 7.7% of the total.


Party members with at least a college degree numbered 57,786,000, representing 57.6% of all members. This is an increase of 1.4 percentage points compared to the previous year.


By age group, there were 12,272,000 members aged 30 or younger, 22,239,000 aged 31 to 40, 18,728,000 aged 41 to 50, 18,058,000 aged 51 to 60, and 28,973,000 aged 61 or older.
