On June 27, Jeonnam Province received approval for seven offshore wind power projects with a total capacity of 2.6GW along the west coast of Jeonnam, according to the results of the 313th Power Generation Business Review by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s Electricity Committee. The seven projects are Shinan Blue Jaeun, Blue Imja, Blue Sini, Blue Bigeum 1·2, Shinan K-Wind Power, and Yeosu Yi Sunshin 1.

The five Shinan Blue projects applied for by Credo Offshore each have a generation capacity of 400MW, totaling 2GW. KCH's Shinan K-Wind Power project has a capacity of 323MW, while DeepWind Offshore (DWO)'s Yeosu Yi Sunshin 1 project is 345MW. These projects are being developed in the offshore areas of Shinan and Yeosu.

With this, Jeonnam now holds a total of 21.3GW in power generation business approvals, adding the newly approved 2.6GW to the previously approved 18.7GW, bringing the province close to its 30GW target.

This figure accounts for 61% of the nationwide approved generation capacity of 34.8GW, clearly demonstrating Jeonnam's status as the optimal location for offshore wind power.

By city and county within Jeonnam, the offshore wind power supply targets are 9GW for Yeosu, 4GW for Goheung, 5GW for Yeonggwang, 0.3GW for Haenam, 2.3GW for Jindo, 1.2GW for Wando, and 8.2GW for Shinan. With the Electricity Committee’s recent approval, the realization of the total 30GW supply target is now in sight.

Among the newly approved projects, one is part of the 3.2GW Shinan Offshore Wind Power Cluster Project. Excluding two projects currently undergoing wind condition measurement by KEPCO out of the ten cluster projects, all eight projects that applied for power generation business approval have now been approved.

Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, stated, "In the era of artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy is as essential as rice is to industry, and we will strive to become a global hub for offshore wind power." He added, "We welcome the new administration's strong commitment to expanding renewable energy. By realizing a system where electricity generated in Jeonnam is consumed in Jeonnam, such as through the creation of the Haenam AI Supercluster, we also expect to gain further momentum in promoting an energy basic income."

Meanwhile, on June 18?19, Jeonnam Province hosted the nation’s first offshore wind industry expo at the Yeosu Expo Convention Center. The province is making every effort to vitalize the offshore wind industry by announcing a 13GW offshore wind vision for eastern Jeonnam, signing MOUs for energy basic income and equipment supply chain development, and facilitating meetings between equipment suppliers and power generation companies.
