Bucheon City to Implement 'Public Management System for City Buses' on No. 10A Route Starting in July

Starting July 1, Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province will convert the No. 10A bus route, which connects Beombak-dong and Okgil-dong to Yeokgok Station, to the 'Public Management System for City Buses.'

Since March 2023, the city has been operating the No. 10A route flexibly on weekdays using four reserve vehicles from the bus company to alleviate severe on-board congestion on the No. 10 route (Okgil-dong~Yeokgok Station~Yeouido). However, persistent issues have been raised regarding a shortage of bus drivers and increased fatigue among workers.

To ensure the stable operation of bus routes, the city allocated approximately 6.2 billion KRW for the public management system for city buses this year. Starting July 1, the No. 10A route will be converted to the public management system, with the number of operating buses increasing from four to five, and the number of daily trips expanding from 56 to 68.2.

In addition, the current one-way operation system will be changed to a full-time round-trip operation system, further improving local residents' access to subway stations.

So far, the city has already converted a total of eight bus routes? No. 25, No. 5-3, No. 5-4, No. 8, No. 99, No. 58-1, No. 77, and No. 23-2?to the public management system, strictly adhering to 100% of the approved operating frequency even though these routes have low ridership but are deemed essential. As a result, bus intervals have stabilized, and complaints regarding non-stop buses and reckless driving have decreased.

A Bucheon City official stated, "The No. 10A bus route is an example of normalization achieved through multiple consultations with the bus company, prioritizing the improvement of citizen convenience." The official added, "We will continue to expand the public management system to improve service quality, strengthen public interest, and ensure a stable supply of bus drivers, thereby guaranteeing citizens' right to mobility."

Meanwhile, the city is currently conducting an online survey through July 7 to develop a citizen-centered bus route reform plan. Citizens can participate via the city website, QR codes posted at bus stops, and on notices inside city bus exit doors.
