Citing Sources: "Top 10 Deals" by U.S. Commerce Secretary
Trump Unlikely to Extend Mutual Tariff Suspension Period
Bloomberg News reported on June 29 (local time) that the United States is nearing trade agreement deals with several countries, including Taiwan and Indonesia.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg News also reported that agreements with South Korea and Vietnam are possible.
Previously, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on June 26 that by the expiration of the mutual tariff suspension period on July 8, "We are making the Top 10 deals, categorizing them, and letting other countries align themselves accordingly."
He added, "We will reach agreements with the countries that have agreed, and all other countries negotiating with us will receive our response and then be included in that package." Since the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration, Korea's trade negotiations with the United States have been led by Yeo Han-koo, head of trade negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Earlier, the White House on June 26 hinted at an extension of the mutual tariff suspension period, but with President Donald Trump making it clear that there would be no extension, the tariff war, which had temporarily paused, is now expected to resume.
In an interview with Fox News on June 29, President Trump was asked about his plans as the mutual tariff suspension deadline approaches. He replied, "What we are going to do is send a letter to every country." President Trump said, "It's very simple. We will send letters. I think it's better to do it now." This is interpreted as an indication that he will not extend the mutual tariff suspension period.
President Trump emphasized that it is not possible to negotiate with all 200 countries involved in the trade talks, and that the letters regarding tariffs to be sent soon will mark "the end of trade negotiations."
Of the 57 countries designated as subject to mutual tariffs, the United Kingdom is the only one that has reached an agreement with the United States. President Trump has also recently claimed to have signed a trade deal with China.
