Points Awarded for Using Stairs, Recycling, and Reusable Shopping Bags
Park Seungwon: "A Comprehensive Platform for Everyday Climate Action"
Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province announced on June 30 that it will change the name of its carbon neutrality initiative from "Climate Militia Carbon Neutrality Point" to "Climate Militia Carbon Savings Bank" starting July 1.
The new name reflects the idea of reducing carbon through everyday carbon-neutral actions and collectively protecting the planet through these efforts.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "The key to making Gwangmyeong a carbon-neutral city lies in small but consistent actions in citizens' daily lives," and added, "I hope that the 'Climate Militia Carbon Savings Bank' will become a comprehensive lifestyle platform that encourages citizen participation."
The term "Carbon Savings Bank" in the new name is an officially registered trademark used by the environmental NGO Green Asia for its tree planting carbon reduction campaign. The city has agreed to continue using the name and to cooperate with the organization through a partnership agreement.
This initiative is a citizen participation program that began in March 2023. Citizens earn points by contributing to carbon reduction through everyday actions such as using stairs, separating recyclables, and using reusable shopping bags. The program consists of 19 action items across six categories.
The number of registered members has surpassed 14,100, and the cumulative number of actions taken has reached approximately 960,000. According to the city, these efforts have resulted in a reduction of about 172 tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the effect of planting approximately 47,770 ten-year-old trees.
Previously, in April, the city held a naming contest to expand citizen participation and strengthen brand recognition, officially adopting "Climate Militia Carbon Savings Bank" as the new name. The city plans to complete its analysis of first-half results next month and launch promotions to recruit new participants and raise awareness.
