The government restructuring plan, known as the "Lee Jaemyung proposal," which includes the establishment of a new Public Prosecution Office due to the separation of prosecutorial and indictment powers, the separation of the Ministry of Economy and Finance's budget functions, and the creation of a Ministry of Climate and Energy, is expected to take shape this week.
According to political sources on June 30, the Presidential National Planning Committee's Task Force on Organizational Restructuring held a meeting the previous day at the annex of the Government Complex Seoul in Changseong-dong to discuss government restructuring measures. Cho Seungrae, spokesperson for the National Planning Committee, stated, "We have selected as fast-track tasks those issues that require urgent decisions and execution for the immediate normalization of the state, including matters affecting people's livelihoods."
The National Planning Committee has previously stated that the separation of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, prosecution reform, and the establishment of the Ministry of Climate and Energy are the top priorities for organizational restructuring. In addition, there have been ongoing discussions about reorganizing the trade functions within the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Within the ruling party, there are reportedly considerations to transfer the Office of Trade Negotiations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or to place it under the direct control of the Presidential Office or the Prime Minister's Office. The establishment of a Ministry of Population, the reorganization of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family into the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Affairs, and the expansion of the National AI Committee may also be included in the restructuring plan.
Meanwhile, the National Planning Committee will receive a second work report from the prosecution later this week.
