Yoon Hojoong, the nominee for Minister of the Interior and Safety, on June 30 emphasized that the abolition of the Police Bureau is a campaign pledge of President Lee Jaemyung, stating, "I will seek ways to address this issue in consultation with the National Planning Commission."
On his first day commuting to his new office in a building in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, Yoon reiterated, "I would like to reaffirm that the abolition of the Police Bureau is a pledge President Lee made to the people as a candidate," making these remarks.
Previously, the Police Bureau under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety was established in August 2022 under the Yoon Sukyeol administration. The Minister of the Interior and Safety was granted direct authority over personnel appointments for senior police officials at the rank of superintendent or higher, as well as direct command and supervision. At the time, there was backlash, including a meeting of police station chiefs (superintendents) nationwide who opposed the establishment of the Police Bureau.
Regarding another pledge by President Lee?the livelihood recovery consumption coupon, which has already been reflected in the supplementary budget?Yoon stated, "We will do our best to incorporate the opinions of the National Assembly and ensure that these coupons play a significant role in reviving consumer sentiment and domestic demand, which are currently at a low point."
He added, "The greatest beneficiaries of domestic demand recovery will be small business owners and self-employed individuals in local traditional markets and neighborhood commercial districts. Considering that this budget is structured to directly support small business owners and the self-employed through expenditures that translate into their sales, I want to emphasize that this is an essential budget for restoring livelihoods."
Yoon also stressed the transition to an AI government. He said, "To create a competent and efficient government, I will take the lead in establishing the world's first AI democratic government through AX and AI transformation," adding, "Protecting personal information is also one of the government's important responsibilities."
Yoon stated, "I will work to ensure that the government is not one that rules over or controls the people, but rather one that walks alongside its citizens," and added, "I will take the lead in creating a more dynamic government through cooperation between the central and local governments and by moving forward together with citizens."
