According to CNN on June 29 (local time), British police have launched an investigation into comments made by the rap duo Bob Villain during their performance at the Glastonbury Festival.
On the previous day, rapper Bob Villain shouted "Free, free Palestine" and "Death, death to the IDF" during their set at the festival's West Holts Stage. On the screen behind the stage, a message appeared reading, "The UN has defined this as genocide, but the BBC calls it a 'conflict.'" This message appeared to target the BBC, which was broadcasting the festival live.
This scene was broadcast through the BBC's on-demand video service, iPlayer.
The Israeli Embassy in the United Kingdom expressed concern over these remarks, calling them "incendiary and hate-filled rhetoric." The embassy stated, "Chanting 'Death to the IDF' in front of tens of thousands of spectators raises serious concerns about the normalization of extreme language and the glorification of violence," and urged the Glastonbury Festival organizers, artists in the UK, and public leaders to condemn such rhetoric and reject all forms of hatred.
The festival organizers stated that they were "appalled by Villain's remarks," adding, "The chant clearly crossed the line, and we are urgently reminding all involved that antisemitism, hate speech, and incitement to violence are not tolerated at Glastonbury."
A BBC spokesperson said, "Some of the comments made during Villain's performance were highly offensive," and added, "There are no plans to make this performance available for replay on BBC iPlayer."
